Applicability of motor cortex localizations with navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be used to non-invasively localize the motor cortical representation areas by stimulation of the motor cortex locally with a small magnetic pulse and simultaneously measuring electromyographic responses from selected muscles. The motor representation areas pinpointed with TMS has been shown to correlate well with the corresponding areas defined with many different modalities, e.g. functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and direct electrical stimulation of the cortex.

My research is focused on showing the applicability of motor cortex localizations with navigated TMS in patients with epilepsy, brain tumours and after stroke. To better understand the validity of the mappings in presurgical evaluation the sources of error and their magnitude need to be assessed.
