Research interests and activities

My postdoctoral project (2012-2016) interrogates national narratives in the age of genomics. The project starts with the premise that recent developments in population genomics have challenged the concepts of race, history/prehistory and global/local on which national narratives are usually predicated. The project asks how national narratives negotiate this threat to conceptual coherence, and how the mutually embedded histories of race, gender, and sexuality inform the new forms of national narration that have emerged.

After completing the postdoc in 2016, I will turn my attention to the cultural debate surrounding the introduction and integration of new vaccines into national vaccination programs in Finland, Sweden, the UK and the US. Building on cultral studies and media studies, the project explores cultural emotions and assumptions surrounding vaccines in culture (especially the media). Furthermore, building on science studies and gender studies, I approach vaccines as embodied technologies that both reproduce and refashion ideas of difference.

My first monograph, Gender, Sexuality and Reproduction in Evolutionary Narratives was published by Routledge in May 2013. The book examines the current popularity of evolutionary psychological explanations of gender and sexuality by analyzing their commitments to and revisions of the Darwinian narrative tradition. Through a range of popular, literary and scientific texts, the book identifies instabilities and inconsistencies in current evolutionary discourse, opening evolution up for feminist and queer revision.

I have also edited (with Sari Irni and Mianna Meskus) a book on gender and technoscience in Finnish society, Muokattu elämä (Molded Life), published by the Finnish academic press Vastapaino in 2014.

Current teaching

Bioteknologia, ruumiillisuus ja erot [Biotechnology, Embodiment and Difference], Spring 2016.

I supervise MA and PhD theses in feminist science studies and feminist cultural studies.
