My main interests are the evolution of social parasitism and phylogeography of ants. It has been suggested that ant social parasites may evolve sympatrically from their hosts through intraspecific social parasitism. In my Ph.D. thesis, I study social parasitism in the red ant Myrmica rubra which has two size classes of queens, large macrogynes and small microgynes. The microgynes are inquilines, obligate intraspecific social parasites of the macrogynes. The microgyne morph was described as a separate species, M. microrubra (Seifert 1993), but it was later synonymised with its host. However, the two queen morphs differ genetically, which suggests that they may be speciating from each other sympatrically. I my studies, I use phylogeographic, population-genetic and behavioral approaches. I also compare phylogeographies of M. rubra and M. ruginodis, the sister species of M. rubra. My work will elucidate Pleistocene refugia and postglacial colonisation of ants, and clarify, if genetic differences between M. rubra and its microgyne social parasite result from population-biological factors of the parasite, or from incipient speciation. I am working in the research group Systematics and Evolutionary Biology of Ants in the supervision of Docent Riitta Savolainen.
